Confirmation looks to have arrived on what chipsets are in the new 3G iPhone to be released this Tuesday.

quad-band GSM support (as we currently have), A-GPS, and tri-band UMTS / HSDPA — which would make the new iPhone(s) 3G-capable in just about every market in the world.
It covers 850MHz and 2100MHz which is the new Telecom network.
Lost of shipping information around that Apple has been flooding the US with unmarked boxes and even Australian retailers have received packages embargoed until Tuesday. So iPhone 3G units may be available in volume sooner than expected.
We should know all Tuesday morning.

Telecom’s new network is only GSM 850Mhz it is *not* 3G 850Mhz. Their 3G network is 2100Mhz only and will cover cities and other major metropolitan areas. There have been plenty of rumors of a 3G iPhone supporting 900MHz UMTS or even two different handsets (like the new Sony Ericsson which will have 2 different models).
If this is the case then Telecom may as well forget about the iPhone because with the foorprint of Vodafone’s 900MHz 3G network growing by the day you would have to be pretty stupid to want to be stuck at GPRS or EDGE speeds when you could be experiencing HSDPA speeds.
GPS! Yes!
That’s going to be the real game-changer for this device… there are so many options available for development where you can augment your physical location with live data services.
@Steve, yeah I know that 3G is only on 2100 so it will work right? The issue is the extent to which Telecom roles out 2100 which is unlikely to be out of the main centres. Is that right?
I wasn’t sure from the article if that all iPhones support all of those frequencies or if that was just the firmware and there would be different models with different chipsets.

Yes the iPhone will work fine on Telecom’s 2100 3G network and their 850 GSM network.
I’ve also heard rumors that VF will be deploying EDGE very soon on their network which will at least improve upon the terrible GPRS speeds.
VF is not deploying EDGE. Why on earth would we roll out a network that is that slow?

On Telecom’s network build AS I UNDERSTAND IT they’re talking about 2100MHz only in the three main centres and even then only in the CBDs… perhaps someone from Telecom can confirm that because I’m astounded by that as a decision. Initially they talked about 13 main centres and then about three main cities and now three CBDs? Weird.
The rest of the country will be served by the 850MHz network which will be GSM/EDGE only, not 3G. Again, I’m astounded and don’t know why that would be the case. Why build a 2.75G network when the rest of the world is on 3G and moving to HSPA.

I believe that is because 2100 requires 4 times as many sites so the network build to do 3G at the spectrum is prohibitive.

@Adam GPS a gamechanger? I think not. If I had a buck for everytime someone told me Location Based Services are going to be the next big thing then I’d probably have the only viable business case for location based services.
Paul, I understand that the 3 main centres that Telecom is installing it in is Auckland city, North Shore city and Manukau city
And I think (speaking only for me) that you’ll see more sites deployed pretty quickly after launch.
LTE is well cool and we’ll be demonstrating it later this year… expect real world speeds of up to 50Mbit/s down to the handset. Nice.

From the guy that knew Vodafone had the iPhone well before the unwashed masses, how sure are you about those EDGE “rumors”?
so, $199 worldwide absolute maximum price for the 3g Iphone as Steve Jobs put it.
Its your move Vodafone, please dont stuff this one up.

Just checked the plan pricing now, and it’s appalling! $549 for the 8GB model on a 24 month term with 250MB’s of data, and a TXT600 plan (or similar).
$979 open term
and not available on prepay.

Looks like Vodafone killed this thread with that pricing announcement - I’ll return in Nov/Dec to see if anyone is talking about a Telecom offer..
Typical New Zealand companies. Why are we charged so much for such terrible services? I feel like I am living in a technologically backward country. The people want the technology, crave the technology and see every other country get it years before we do. Finally when things do arrive here it is out of the average consumers reach. Absolute rubbish.
If Telecom came out and made a better offer they would kill. Lets get the phone wars started again, things have become stagnant between the two giants.
