AppleTV take 2
Posted by Rod in Apple at 12:43 am on Friday, 15 February 2008

The Apple TV upgrade is now available for download. It upgraded easily and kept photos and music etc.

With a NZ AppleID you can see the US TV shows and HD movies but when you try to get them a message comes up saying they are not available in the NZ iTunes store. Sigh.

I may have to move my virtual identity to Idaho.

I have two (shortly to be three) apple id’s:

My one in the US. I get Phil to buy me top up cards when I run out.

Leonie has a New Zealand one, which has our normal CC on it. This only gets used for stuff which is only available in the NZ store (eg Holly Smith).

I’m about to get a UK one, too, as there are a few places that give away free tracks, so it’ll be handy to have.

I’m sure you know enough people in the US who could buy you top up vouchers (they can do it online or go into a store)…..

For the record, the rentals ROCK, tho in NZ, the bandwidth usage would be a little crippling if you used it a lot. I’m now paying $4 to download, watch and delete. Before I had to pay $15 to download, watch and delete….

Rod, hello from a kiwi in LA.
Check out this mock up for a new revenue stream using iPhone / iTouch and your ITunes account.
    Could be worth billions.

The movies are apparently about 2 GB. That’s $2 of internet charge in NZ on xnet DSL. If your video rental store is 5 km away it’ll cost you that much in fuel alone to drive there and back in most cars. Make that 2 km or less if you have a SUV.

I do the same as Nic - US Apple ID - works great. Rented a film the other night on my mac (haven’t got an Apple TV yet - coming soon!). works very well - definitely need a 10G plan - on a 3G BB plan, I could only squeeze one movie per month within the cap. Looking forward to seeing what HD is like. From all accounts, quality is very good

2GB sounds about right, surprisingly good image quality, say 2/3 of the way from SD->Blu-ray to be fair enough of shots on Blu-Ray movies are out of focus that it’s not a major difference.
It’s significantly better than SD & it’s convenient, for me anyway it’s good enough & I like it ( alot ).
The flickr integration is pretty dang cool to, shame about Microsoft looking to buy Yahoo, that’ll go away then :(.
