I retired from personal blogging in July 2008.
But you can find me over at http://blog.xero.com.

Phew. The Herald series is done. Lot’s of positive feedback. Thank you.
The entire series is here. How to start a business.
Special thanks to Chris Brown from Sputnik who came up with the idea. Liam Dann from the New Zealand Herald who ran with it, and Kate from Xero who helped pitch it and checked I was making sense.
Hopefully it motivated you to start a business or work on your existing business. And if it did, of course you would use the worlds best online accounting system to manage it.

Rod, good series. Maybe the government can make it compulsory to export. Imagine what that would do for the economy. So when is the book coming out?
Another source is a book by John O’Hara called Commercialising Innovation available as a free download on the NZTE website.
Hope you don’t mind Rod, but I’m going to use this post to pay tribute to Sir Edmund. The man was a legend in every sense of the word and no single person has put New Zealand on the map more than he. As Kiwis we probably took him for granted a little - here’s hoping a few people take the time out now to appreciate his achievements and gain inspiration from them.
Rest in Peace Sir Ed - you were quite simply “The Man”.
Thank you for the series Rod. I have been regularly reading the column and sharing it with many of my contacts.
Request - it would be fantastic if you could add “How to Start a Business” as a category to your blog to make it easy to find and refer to others in the future?
Good idea Jennifer, done.

Maybe the government can make it compulsory to export.
Well, import substitution is not be be sneezed at either.
But a good series, clear and simple to understand. Recommend it.
Hi Rod. Loved your series on ‘How to Start a Business’ although I have absolutely no intention of doing so!
Go on Mark - you’ve been telling everyone else how to do it for long enough!
:-)
Hello from the US. This is my first time commenting, but after reading your “How to Start a Business” I was immediately impressed. You addressed all the elusive concerns I had about my new business. I do systems integration and support services by leveraging open source applications for educational to mid-size markets. My business model is “open source style” so its not easily evident of huge scalability and ROI, but to anyone that knows a thing or two about technology its actually pretty good (confidence boost!). Anyway, thanks for the free information, hopefully we can exchange some talks in the future!
