I retired from personal blogging in July 2008.
But you can find me over at http://blog.xero.com.
It’s last days for Wellington institution The Chocolate Fish.

Background article here … Wellington’s Chocolate Fish to wriggle off hook, though things aren’t as optimistic as that article reports.
The real story appears to be less about the council, more about a local spat and opportunism. Regardless it just needs to get sorted.
The Wrights and the Pennington’s have done a huge amount for Wellington. They have been open now for 10 years with only a few days off. The Fish is the first place I take overseas visitors, straight off the plane, to experience a stunning view, unpretentious surroundings, great coffee and friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel at home. I’d argue the Fish is more important to business in Wellington than TePapa.
There is a deal underway to move the Fish further into Scorching Bay to the triathlon club. The issue here is the land is on both Council and DOC land so you can imagine the bureaucracy in getting that sorted.
Council have been working hard but surely this is a case for a divine intervention.
The Chocolate Fish is too important to be down for even a month. Just get the Wrights/Pennington’s back doing what they do best, as fast as possible, and sort the paper work out later.

Hey Rod, I am not sure whether that looks like East Borne, but it looks similar. I love Lower Hutt, my dad is a retired Tongan Church Methodist Minister for Petone small community Church (Nelson St). I used to commute from Auckland to Wellington in the mid90s to visit them, (when my parents were still down there in Petone). My folks know the Afeaki there (Inoke who played for super-14 Wellington).I know that community really well (the Small Petone Tongan Community Methodist Church members). Of course the minister’s son (me) always lead the drinkers to town (Wellington City). I used to be called the devil’s son (because I took most of the youths to bars in the city), but I believe that small community has changed since then. I tried to preach them technology then, but hey, they weren’t keen. I hope that Wellington IT industry, would inspire that small community to participate.
Went there for lunch today. The place seems almost as good as closed already. The awning is gone. The menu is down to pretty much just coffee and cakes and toasted sandwiches. The staff look sullen.
Sounds hard to believe that there are still conservative communities that consider going to a bar a sin. I do think that preaching technology is the solution. only technology and knowledge are the keys to progress. we have to be optimistic, the Internet penetrates even the toughest conservative fortresses. i know that since i come from a traditional background as well and technology was my stimulus for freedom and open mindedness
Dumb move and oh so subtle business move - let someone else do the hard yards for ten years building up a name and reputation then pull the rug out under them and earn mega bucks off their work.
