I retired from personal blogging in July 2008.
But you can find me over at http://blog.xero.com.
Flicked my BlackBerry on in Sydney this morning to a inbox full of emails from friends with various x rated suggestions of how we can put more sex into technology.
I thought that was a bit odd until I checked Stuff much later to see what this morning’s tech stories were and found myself quoted in this …
Tech sector needs to be sexier
Phew, that saves some explaining at home.
Seriously though, Tech is sexy.
- We have sexy gadgets to play with.
- Work is social and you meet lots of interesting people.
- You can travel with your career. This week is 5 cities in 4 days.
- It can pay well.
- You can have work life balance (in theory - haven’t got there myself yet).
- You can work from anywhere.
- There is a chance of getting stupidly rich, with not a lot of capital, in a very short time.
- You communicate with people all over the world every day.
- There’s lots of change. You can never get bored.
- The old timers will remember Comdex.
A career in technology opens the doors for all sorts of opportunities. In the last couple of years I been to countless countries, had dinner in a German castle, flown in a Gulfstream, drunk ridiculously expensive wine and met brilliant people.
The person I’m sitting next to in the Sydney AirNZ lounge right now has just reeled off trips to Rome, Cannes, Shanghai, Tokyo, New York, Singapore, SanFran, London and Bangkok in the last couple of years as well. Another has been to Fankfurt, Dublin, London, Hong Kong, Chicago, Montreal, Seattle and Las Vegas since 2003 - all on tech.
Tech is sexy baby.

Well, I’ve found the panel interviewing you on National Radio tonight pretty boring themselves. They have no idea, maybe they think we’re all system administrators (with all the due respect for the fun guys that run our systems).
They don’t know how flexible and open your mind becomes, and that it’s really hard to exercise your brain and learn, learn, learn…

From Facebook:
Mauricio Freitas is attending The 2008 It Won’t Stay in Vegas” CES Blogger Party.
Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.
nothing says sexy like IPO baby!
it’s one of the few industries you can start a business for free - the price of a blog and an adsense account. i love that kind of capitalism :)
Radio interview (approx time was 4:50 pm) should be available here …

Richard Matthews would agree with you
New Zealand executive Richard Mathews will leave his job of three years at Australian software company Mincom with a A$26.8 million (NZ$31.7 million) paycheque.
……..The 43-year-old, who led ERP software vendor JD Edwards to considerable success in New Zealand during the 1990s, earned $4.8 million last year.

Tech is sexy? Tell that to the coders on the coal face - just don’t mention the Gulfstream just after they’ve spend 40+ minutes debugging someone elses code, only to replace a ‘=’ with ‘+=’!
Business is sexy, making money is sexy, resolving ip conflicts just ain’t.
got to agree with Zombie there… The majority of tech is not sexy (mention the words “Enterprise Service Bus” and try and think sexy!) . The thing about tech, that differs from the majority of jobs, is that the years you spend doing un-sexy stuff can set you up for lots of … er… sexy, interesting stuff later on.
Thats the message that should be out there.
Tech is sexy right up until you walk into a room full of guys saying geeky acronyms like ‘lol’ out loud :)
Other than that, totally sexy.
I feel tech still misses the je ne sais quoi present in some other areas; however, this is probably related to the fact tech is inherently quant - with no scope for uncertainties.
Rod, if you enjoyed the Gulfstream talk to me if you’d ever like to charter a Citation.
