Vodafone Mobile Connect Card + Leopard
Posted by rod@drury.net.nz in Apple, Communications at 7:53 pm on Wednesday, 31 October 2007

Nice one Vodafone, the data guys have been hard at work sourcing drivers for running your VMC/Vodem on Leopard.

It’s a large file so they’ve put it on a FTP server so you may need an FTP client to retrieve it.

They’ve posted it here to get it out quickly.

I’m really impressed with this. (Remember the months we had to wait to use the Vodem on a Mac when they were released?).

I’m on a Telecom T3G Minimax and that works fine on Leopard.

Hey the link has expired. Please post it somewhere else. This would resolve a reaaally big problem for me. I bought the connect card 3 days ago and I’m already down :(

    Hi there,

we’ll have it up on the Vodafone site itself shortly so I’ll send you the link from there… that was a temporary site so we could get the word out as quickly as possible and it looks like it’s been maxed out already. Blimey!

    Cheers

Will you be so kind as to post the link when it’s up? Or a mirror link? I’m really lost without this.

Still not on the vodafone site as of this morning.
Don’t bother clicking the link to be updated by email when the software changes… the page on their RIGHT NOW FAQ site is extremely out of date… good to see that investment paying off!

just spoke to VF business support.

fix has been completely withdrawn (i.e. it won’t be appearing shortly) and they are working on new update.
no advice on timing, but CSR’s are offering to email you when it is available.

seems Paul Brislen is getting contrary advice!

there is no urgent need for a fix. the vodafone mobile connect programme crashes in leopard but performs its job well before it dies. just run it, then stop the programme and then connect to the modem.

Open the vodafone software, force it to quit (ALT+CTRL+Right Click on program icon in dock) and then simply connect as you usually would.

In fact, this is how i am writing this message. New software seemingly not needed.

I took the following steps using the existing Novatel drivers and VMC installer and so far working well!

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=853242

    NovatelMerlinDriver_v1_7_2.dmg
    vodafone_mc_installer.dmg (2.07.03)

Comment by ed at 9:01 am on 5 November 2007

thanks Matt for the fix steps. works just the same as Tiger and no need to Force Quit, etc.

Merlin driver and uninstall steps here:
    http://www.novatelwireless.com/support/merlin-xu870-apple.html

note: the file names may be different:
    /System/Library/Extensions/MerlinHSDPADriver.kext - not necessarily called this…
    /Library/Receipts/MerlinHSDPA.pkg - not there..
    /Library/Modem Scripts/HSDPA Support (XU870) - deleted the Version script…

You might notice that Leopard originally opened a toolbar item for HSDPA and it didn’t work. This isn’t needed with the above fix.

Sounds like someone’s discovered something nasty in the software… Sorry about that. I can’t imagine how this happened. Software is usually so reliable. :-|

Anyway, as soon as I get the nod (again) I’ll re-post here so you can get the official stuff. Of course, you seem to all be doing well anyway…

I’ll move along now. Nothing to see.

    Cheers

Well the modem connects without even running the vodafone.app.
Just connect the cable, let it there for just a minute, then click connect and voila!
I realized it accidentally, and i have no idea whether this works in tiger, but in leopard it works like a charm!

Do you happen to have the minimax software for Telecom NZ, or know where to find it? Maxon Australia only has the Australian config, and Telecom “doesn’t support” the mac, though it does work, they say.

I had it on my old laptop, but foolishly didn’t copy it to my new one, and can no longer find it!

Comment by Rod at 3:42 pm on 25 November 2007

It used to be here http://www.rtwireless.co.nz

Comment by Jason at 10:33 am on 26 November 2007

I’m afraid “used to be” might be right. I originally got it from them about a year ago, but can’t find it any more — looks like they no longer support it, and their link for maxon products goes to maxon australia (who doesn’t appear to have the nz mac software). I wonder if the file is still on the rtwireless server somewhere, do you have a full link address for it on rtwireless.co.nz?

How does Vodafone’s data coverage compare to telecom’s?

Sorry to bug you with this,
    Jason

    Hi Brendon,

all the latest drivers/upgrades/patches/whathaveyou should be here:

Hi, don’t know if this will help anyone - I’m running a Huwai E272 modem, which I got in Italy. All was going fine till the Mobile Connect software stopped working one day….
No idea why, but was looking at this post this morning, and saw Sonia’s suggestion to leave it for a minute. This doesn’t work if there is a PIN code on the sim for the modem. However, if you put the sim into a normal phone and disable the pin request, then Leopard seems to work its magic. As of just now, its working even better than it did when I was using the mobile connect program!

Thanks again, hope this is of some use to someone.
