If you’re like me and flat out (sorry the blog posts have slowed down) you might get a bit behind in your gmail.
The search in gmail does allow for some structured search commands. A really useful one is label:unread. That shows you all of your unread mail that you can quickly process and get back to a fully read mail box.

Use labels and filters wherever possible. Make sure that you set them to skip the inbox, this way they go straight to the label (similar to a folder), and you can view them at your leisure keeping your inbox for the non-standard email.
Only Gmail hint I know (and use) is to press SHIFT before clicking on a link (generally “Compose”) and it opens in a new window … nice

My tip: use filters to organise your life.
For instance, if I find a book that I’d quite like to buy with my large Christmas bonus (still a few months away), I email myself the URL with a subject of “wishlist: Ruby Cookbook” - the Gmail filter then labels it with a “wishlist” label and stars it for me to review later.
I do this for all sorts of things: travel arrangements, important file backups, CV’s.
Rod, maybe you could get hold of someone at Google (I thought you know someone who works there) and ask them this question “When does Gmail come out of Beta!”.
Soon this will have taken longer than Vista to get to release stage and at best its an average email client.
I use it when on the road to redirect my inbox to in case I cannot VPN/RDC in and get my email from work. I can hear some saying “when can you not VPN in?” The answer to that would be when you are connecting through GSM roaming partners of Vodafone who block VPN access or offer such a bad service that its all too difficult. I then download from Gmail to Outlook on my notebook.
Does anyone know how to get Gmail to delete the emails on the web, because once I have them in Outlook I don’t need them in Gmail.
Dermott. If you are downloading you Gmail via POP onto Outlook you could also do the following in Gmail to delete the copy you downloaded.
Go to Settings then the Forwarding and POP tab. Note “POP Download” No.2 “When messages are accessed with POP”.. there is a dropdown box and you can set to delete Gmail copy or Archive it once it has been downloaded via POP.
My favourite Gmail tip! You won’t need Outlook any more. That’s a pretty good one right there. Another one though for people without Blackberry’s that I use when traveling in NZ. Because I have an Xtra account which I rarely use I can pick up my email on my Telecom cellphone. It’s predictably slow though so I don’t want to have to wade through all the messages I receive. So, I set filters so messages from certain people, or messages that contain certain words, will be automatically forwarded by Gmail to my Xtra account and then I can get them on the cell phone where ever I am in NZ. It’s been very handy!
Steven, thanks for the tip on deleting Gmail messages. Personally I don’t think Gmail comes close to replacing Outlook. At least with Outlook you can work offline and you can embed images which you cannot with Gmail or Yahoo or Hotmail. I use a BB but is not much good for attachments. And when you are in Europe your Telecom cellphone will not work very well.
Logged in to my gmail to check out the label:unread trick and the tips area had a link to all the gmail shortcuts.

As per the address above:
1. Dots aren’t recognised in the mailbox portion of the address (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=10313, they are required for logging in though)
2. “Plus Addressing” works, even if too many sites wrongly regard “+” as an invalid character. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_address#Plus_.28or_Minus.29_addressing)
3. GoogleMail.com is synonymous with GMail.com
I use this to identify source/filter incoming mail, clearly there’s nothing to stop someone removing the non-critical elements.
Only problem is, GMail, while allowing you to send from non-GMail addresses (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=1570) won’t let you customise your From: address to match a receivable address, like the error message says: “You cannot send e-mail from H.amish.Mac.Ewan@GoogleMail.com.” But I can receive to that address.
