Cable Car Challenge
Posted by rod@drury.net.nz in Events, TechBiz at 7:28 pm on Monday, 18 June 2007

The Wellington Cable Car Challenge business planning competition begins tonight.

The prize is $50,000. Including $30,000 of seed capital for your business. Thirty Thousand Dollars. Wow!

Finalists have 4.5 mins going up the cable car to do their final pitch. The return 4.5 minutes is for Q&A. Nice!

PlanHQ is providing the platform so it’s easy to enter and collaborate.

Bah, the DomPost article didn’t mention what PlanHQ’a role was:

I thought Tim had maybe taken up modeling as a side line. Great use of PlanHQ.

Great idea. Shame we haven’t got something similar in Christchurch. Fancy doing a 4.5min punt on the Avon, Rod?

    Cheers, Ian

Ian is right - the tyranny of distance talked about in relation to NZ’s place in the world can also be used to describe the realities of being located in Chch and seeing all that is happening - primarily in Wellington but also Auckland. Groups such as ConnectNZ and the incubator down here help but we need to form, build and leverage some good networks as well.

    Interesting times

Ian, Ben, you guys should do something similar in CHCH then. “Take a punt …” We’ve been working on this for the best part of a year. Year One will be tough but we’re punting on over over 100 entries (fingers crossed). Hope it could be an annual event. Two masterstrokes in the planning …
    1. Clare Nolan’s idea of using the cable car, which led to the brand.
    2. Knowledge of Tim’s product led to the approach to use PlanHQ for the entry process.
The website is actually cablecarchallenge.com. The .co.nz point to the blog which was kicked off earlier this year and will be providing news & updates during the comp.

MG: you’re on. I’ll do some background work and then make contact to learn from the Wellington experience. We could definitely set something up just like the Cable Car Challenge.
    Cheers, Ian

Ian and I are going to meet up in the next week or two to discuss this.

    Game on!

In Auckland we could do the Southern Motorway challenge, the pitches would be a bit longer though, probably 4.5 hours instead of 4.5 minutes !

Glenn - you could run a competition to solve the congestion issue. Imagine the business growth that would result from sorting that out!

Comment by Fizz at 1:15 pm on 22 June 2007

MG - there’s no need for a competition to solve the congestion issue. The solutions are well known. It’s the cash and leadership required to execute them that’s missing.

Hi all - Who do you guys use for branding and online marketing purposes??

My team - Leftie Group - is entering the CCC and getting quite excited about the whole thing. Branding is pretty important so want to get it right!

    See you in the Car!
