Posted by rod@drury.net.nz in Events, TechBiz at 9:26 am on Friday, 15 June 2007

Nominations are now open for the NZ Open Source awards.

www.nzosa.org.nz

This should be a really interesting event to see who’s pushing the. Awards are a great way to build profile so I hope we see a good number of entries. I hope we see some .Net entries as well.

I’m looking forward to see how people are using OpenSource as part of their commercial business models.

Many thanks for the link Rod. .Net projects would be fantastic As are closed licence systems built using Open Source Components.

This should be a broad all inclusive event. The idea is to highlight the use and creation of Open Source Software by New Zealanders. Whilst there will be “awards” there will be no losers. Sorry if that sounds too PC but that’s the reality of FOSS in NZ right now - there’s too much great stuff!

I think that the best open source software in NZ is the world class machine learning & data-mining Java software called WEKA, from the University of Waikato.

This tool is widely cited in academic literatures. It has a community of users & researchers worldwide, that contributes new algorithms on a regular basis. All the algorithms available in WEKA have been directly implemented from publications that appeared in academic literatures.

The WEKA software Waikato University had won international award in the past:

Won the 2005 Service Award from ACM SIGKDD (Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery & Data Mining)

From Waikato University News : Weka’s Winning Ways

I had been a WEKA user for over 6 years and this software is a world beater. Prof Ian Witten & Dr. Eibe Frank and their team had created a world class piece of software.
