Juha reports Xtra and Microsoft’s long standing relationship looks like it’s nearing its end.
This would be quite a big change as Xtra and MSN have been going for 5 years or so and really has been there from the start of mainstream internet in NZ. Which ever new partner is selected will change the landscape here significantly.
As Juha points out, Microsoft/MSN/Live is free to date, who do they go out with?

It is interesting for several reasons: first, what’ll happen to Xtra’s ad revenue if XtraMSN isn no longer the default in IE? The latest ratings figures I’ve seen put XtraMSN on the top spots.
Second, assuming that it’s easy for MS to change the default home page in XP and Vista (and I don’t know that it is), who will be the new partner? There’s nobody established in NZ who could fill Telecom’s shoes here - so will MS create a local Live.com version, or just import the Aussie or another overseas one?
My money’s on the last alternative.
