I retired from personal blogging in July 2008.
But you can find me over at http://blog.xero.com.
MySQL at Dreamhost was down causing an outage.
The downside of hosted applications is that sometimes they stop. How the hosting company deals with this experience is key for customer service.
Dreamhost had an excellent trouble shooting system. Once I logged on, they presented me with a list of services I was running. I could select them to test, down to the database under my site. It quickly identified my site problem as a known issue and had status updates. I could register to be notified of status changes.
This was excellent and turned a negative into a strong positive.

*phew*.
I hate it when services I recommend go down - especially when I recommended them on the strength of the recommendations of others, rather than from personal experience.
I’m glad the recommendations I got have at least had some value, and I’m a big fan of places that when they have problems, admit them. Sounds like Dreamhost is still at the top of my ‘recommended host’ list…
Hi Rod, have you had anyone (in NZ) comment on performance given that you’re hosted out of the States? We’re looking at setting up a blog and what you get over there is SO MUCH cheaper (and bigger) than what you get here.
I’ve noticed no performance issues. So go for it.
