More good apples
Posted by Rod in Old-blog-archives at 10:17 pm on Tuesday, 29 June 2004

I always make a point of watching any keynote Steve Jobs does.  The latest apple show is as good as ever.

Watch the QuickTime Video of the WWDC.

Note the band in the iPod video is New Zealands StereoGram!

BMW is providing wiring to plug iPods directly into the factory stereo.

His stepping through of the Cinema display updates is brilliant.  Steve just peels back the layers of the onion.  Masterful.

I’m probably ones of MS’s biggest fans but Apple seems to be innovating and really bridging the consumer and technology worlds.  It is all so slick.

SQL & XPATH alternative view
Posted by Rod in Old-blog-archives at 8:43 am on Tuesday, 29 June 2004

Lots of gems in this article that poses an alternative view of where we are going with data access languages.

If You Liked SQL,You’ll Love XQUERY.

One does not know whether to laugh or cry. It has been quite obvious that the designers of SQL had little understanding of data fundamentals in general, and the relational model in particular; and SQL was hardly developed in accordance with good language design principles. If there were any doubts about that to this point, XML and XQuery make it perfectly clear that things are becoming worse, not better.

NewsGator gets funding
Posted by Rod in Old-blog-archives at 4:04 pm on Sunday, 27 June 2004

Significant as NewsGator is a client installed Software written in .Net.  Also it’s entirely sold from the web so shows the that some aspects of the .com dream are still alive.

http://www.newsgator.com/news/archive.aspx?post=40

I’d like to read the section of the business plan that says

Risk:  MS releases a free RSS addin for Outlook

It’s good that this type of application is receiving funding as we should now see a lot more innovation.

Up on MS Site
Posted by Rod in Old-blog-archives at 2:40 pm on Saturday, 26 June 2004

AfterMail is up on the Exchange Email Archiving and Compliance partner page.

Appropriately top of the list :)

What’s fascinating to me is the traditional model of spending lots of investor money for brand may no longer be necessary in many situations. We have 20 sales people in the UK going straight to CIO’s and with that link anyone in the world will find us.  Definately Business 2.0.

UK in July
Posted by Rod in Old-blog-archives at 9:35 pm on Monday, 21 June 2004

I’ll be the UK for most of July.  Heading up July 4.  Staying close to the Brooke’s in Basingstoke.  45mins on the express train to London.  Not far from Reading.

The rental for a 2 bedroom apartment is 490 pounds per week.  Could have been 650.  Broadband is another 70 for the month.

Be nice to escape the winter.

Digital Strategy Consultation
Posted by Rod in Old-blog-archives at 9:17 pm on Monday, 21 June 2004

I attended the governments Digital Strategy consultation workshop today.  Documents are at:

http://www.med.govt.nz/pbt/infotech/digital-strategy/index.html

I was quite impressed with David Cunnliffe, the Associate Minister.  He gets it.  What is in the strategy makes sense and is exciting.  Its natural that a labour government would have an inclusive, don’t leave anyone behind, socialist strategy.

From a entrepreneurs point of view I have a number of concerns.  I’m concerned that there is not enough emphasis on growing the size of the pie.  Im really worried that the burden of paying for super and benefits is falling on a shrinking number of people and that we also need to be able to reward excellence and provide an environment that celebates success and encourages people to pay tax here.

While the Internet provides great oppotunities to export value, it also makes it easier to leave and act for the good of yourself rather than that of your country.

A perspective on regional broadband put forward was interesting.  Why should those living on a far north beach settlement get subsidised to run a relaxed two person business where I have decided to take the pain of living close to infrastructure so that I can succeed.  You could argue that money would be better off helping a proven $5m company grow to a $50m company.

I think it’s much easier in a large group to talk socialist and bloody hard to stand up and say that you want to grow your business.  I think the objectives are the same, only the approach is different.

Some interesting points of view but in general I think this is a step forward.

Video Editing on XP
Posted by Rod in Old-blog-archives at 4:39 pm on Saturday, 12 June 2004

With my new little boy growing up by the minute I felt compelled to get a video camera.  My friend James had done the reserach so I followed him with a Sony DCR-HC40E HandyCam.  Really small and works well.

So with 20 minutes of footage it was time to try making a movie.  I remember seeing an update to Windows Movie Maker on the Windows Update, so I pulled that down.

Within a few minutes I was Peter Jackson.  Great fun!!  The titles, transitions and adding music is really easy.

Going through the final make movie stage I noticed an option to generate a version optimal for Pocket PC. Fantastic.  So now I have full screen landscape movies on my XDAII phone.

Very cool for the proud father.
