The Mount will have their Surf Reef by summer.
The Wellington one has been in process for years.
Mayor Jan Beange said the artificial reef was another project that had been languishing for a number years and it needed leadership from the council. “As a result we have seen more community funds flowing into the project.”
The WCC should just do it. The Reef is great idea. At a time when head offices are leaving Wellington in droves, providing this opportunity to create a the chance of a decent wave on the Wellington South Coast adds immeasurable to the City.
Wellington wants to be a creative capital with great lifestyle. The Reef is so on message it should be a no brainer. More people surf than play Rugby. People buy houses elsewhere just for the surf. We’re trying to attact talent and events.
It may not work but its only Lyall Bay. Any shape will be better than what’s there.
So come on Wellington City Council. Stop deliberating, stop being so PC, stop consulting with the 2% of wowsers that will always object. Just do it. It’s cheap and the upside is enormous.

Good call!
Still no real progress almost 4 years on.
So true that “any shape will be better than what’s there”. Take today for example, there’s a nice swell running, about 2ft, but no banks at all so the whole beach is closing out. What a waste. There isn’t really anything to spoil, develop the beach.
Just saw about 5 Hurricanes surfing at Lyall Bay this afternoon. Maybe that’ll push the rugby loving council into action?
Here’s my post on artificial reefs:
